Wine Culture
The name Old Boy wine négociant was inspired by the Korean film Oldboy, winner of the Gran Prix at
the 2004 Cannes Film Festival – a very direct, rather dark film that gets under your skin and into your
very soul. And this is the nature of our brand and our wines. Our passions and the way we express
ourselves are reinterpreted in the wine we make.
Old Boy is an expression of many different forces: the desire to create wines that surprise and excite
like the films we love; the cinematic and artistic inspiration behind our brand; and the promise of a
thrilling experience with every sip.
With Old Boy, we want to reach out to people and show them that we can all recognise our own tastes
and understand which are the wines for us. We firmly believe that the curiosity that inspires us to
discover new things can foster a critical sense in each one of us. We don’t want to get into an argument
with anyone, but we believe people should make the most of every opportunity to try new experiences
without preconceptions and with open minds.
The first two new experiences we want people to try are Hey Boy! and Hey Girl! wines. These are
honest wines, unique expressions of the grapes they’re made from, the terroirs and land in which they
grow, the spontaneous fermentations from their native yeasts, and the absence of external intervention.
They contain one thing and one thing only: the essence of a wine made from healthy, ripe and natural
grapes.
There have been lots of exciting moments here at Old Boy: our first taste of grapes directly from the
vine to assess the phenolics, the first spontaneous fermentations, and harvest and the manual
preparation of the pied de cuve, to name just three.

Making wine is to us what making films is to Paolo Sorrentino: everything has its own rhythm …
“you write, you create a film, you shoot it, you edit it and then you rest” (from “Il mondo di Sorrentino”, a documentary about the Italian film director and screenwriter)
… we think of a wine (“you write”), choose the grapes (“create a film”), vinify them (”shoot it”), bottle the wine (“edit it”) then wait while it ages (“rest”), before finally releasing it on the market.
